Preview: An in depth study of the fruits of the spirit. This is the eighth lesson in a thirteen-part series on this subject.

Pre-reading: Genesis 6:6-8, Genesis 6:11-14, Genesis 6:17-18, Genesis 6:22.

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 11:1-6.

Memory Verse: Hebrews 10:38.

1. Is it possible to have eternal life without having an unwavering faith in God and His promises according to the foregoing Scriptures? Discuss.
Note: Faith is believing in a promise of something that we cannot see or touch (Hebrews 11:11), faith adds substance (body) to something that we are hoping for, but do not see how to attain. We cannot see or touch God, yet by the revelation of His Holy Spirit, through faith, we can believe that He is always faithful to do exactly what His Word has promised. Read Romans 8:24-25 and II Corinthians 4:13-14, II Corinthians 4:17-18.
2. What motivated Noah to build a huge boat far from any waterway? Genesis 6:6-8, Genesis 6:11-14, Genesis 6:17-18, Genesis 6:22, Hebrews 11:7, II Peter 2:5.
Note: Out of an entire world of lost people, only one man feared and trusted God. For over one hundred years, he worked on the ark according to God’s blueprint. All the while he faithfully preached God’s message to the scoffers who passed by. Even though no one believed him, he continued to trust and obey God. Because of his faithfulness, he and his family were saved when the flood came. We all are here today because of Noah’s faith in God.
3. What enabled Abraham to leave his homeland and kinsmen not even knowing where he was going? Genesis 12:1-4, Hebrews 11:8-10.
Note: Abraham was called out of a heathen nation. He believed in God, and that someday he would reach a city whose builder and maker is God. His sight was set far beyond the visible land of Canaan. Each of these two men were motivated by a loving, trusting faith in an unseen God in an age when mankind had forsaken him. By faith, they stood alone.
4. How much faith must we have to believe in God? Matthew 17:15-21.
5. How much will faith increase when this tiny seed is planted in the Lord? Mark 11:22, Matthew 13:31-32.
6. What continued to increase as Abraham continued to obey God? Genesis 12:5-8, Genesis 12:11-15, Genesis 12:17-19, Genesis 20:1-4, Genesis 20:9-11, Genesis 21:1-4, Genesis 22:1-12, Hebrews 11:17-19.
Note: It was Abraham’s faith in God that brought him out of his homeland, but it took many years of humble obedience to God’s instructions to bring him to a perfect faith.
7. What will our faith do with love and obedience to God? Galatians 5:1, Galatians 5:5-7, Galatians 5:13-16, Galatians 5:22-26.
8. Can faith increase without a spirit of forgiveness? Why not? Luke 17:1-6.
9. Why is doubting God’s promises and faithfulness a sin? James 1:2-8, James 4:8, James 4:17.
10. Who are some of God’s saints who are listed in His hall of faith? Hebrews 11:20-39.
11. Why should we study the lives of these faithful witnesses? Hebrews 12:1-2.
