Preview: An in-depth study of the fruits of the spirit. This is the twelfth lesson in a thirteen-part series on this subject.
Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 2:1-10.
Memory Verse: Ecclesiastes 2:11.
1. Would you say that Solomon was temperate or self-indulgent in the foregoing Scriptures?
2. Did all of his self-indulgence make Solomon happy or content? Ecclesiastes 2:17-19, Ecclesiastes 2:22-23, Ecclesiastes 12:8 & Ecclesiastes 12:12-14.
Note: Webster defines temperance as self-control, abstinence, or moderation. These attributes should apply to all aspects of the Christian life. The Word of God contains all truth and knowledge. The Holy Spirit supplies wisdom and understanding.
3. Must our self-control be under subjection to God’s will in order to be successful in running the spiritual race? I Corinthians 9:24-27.
4. What is man likely to do when his self-control is not under God’s control? Proverbs 3:5-7 & Romans 1:21-28.
5. What else will a spirit of intemperance cause one to do? Romans 1:29-32.
Note: Quite often we hear of someone who has committed a horrible crime that declares that they have no idea why they did it. Human nature that is exposed to ungodly entertainment or associations and is not under subjection of the Holy Spirit is subject to the wicked darts of Satan. If we are not serving God, we are a servant of the Devil. We cannot serve two masters.
6. How must we avoid yielding to the temptation of the flesh? Romans 13:1-2 & Romans 13:11-14.
7. What are some often overlooked areas that we should be temperate in? Proverbs 24:30-34, Proverbs 25:16-17, Proverbs 26:17-19 & Proverbs 26:22.
8. What is the most difficult member of our body to control? James 3:1-10.
9. Are drunkenness and gluttony in the same forbidden class? Deuteronomy 21:20, Proverbs 23:1-2, Proverbs 23:20-21 & Ecclesiastes 6:7.
10. Why must we be temperate in all things? Romans 12:17-20.
Note: Temperance is required in every phase of our lives, whether it’s eating, drinking, dressing, speaking, etc. Read I Corinthians 10:31. Paul advised us to let our moderation be known to all men, yet rejoice in the Lord always. Philippians 4:4-5.
