Preview: This lesson begins the study of John the Baptist and the supernatural circumstances surrounding his birth. It is with John that the days of grace began. This is the first part of a two-part lesson on this subject.


Scripture Reading: Malachi 3:1-6.

Memory Verse: Isaiah 40:3.

1. Of what religious order was Zacharias and of what course? Luke 1:5.
Note: We should be aware of the importance of the foregoing Scriptures. The order of the service of the priest was directed by God and it is through that Divine appointment that we get an idea of the approximate time of the year that Jesus Christ was born.
2. What was the conduct of Zacharias and his wife? Luke 1:6.
3. Did they have children? Luke 1:7.
4. What was Zacharias’ priestly duty? Luke 1:8-9.
5. What appeared to him and what was his reaction? Luke 1:11-12.
6. What did the angel announce? Luke 1:13.
7. Would he bring joy? Why? Luke 1:14-15.
8. What would be his work? Luke 1:16-17.
Note: The angel announced the office and mission of John. His office was to herald or announce the coming of Christ to go before Him in the Spirit and power of Elijah. His mission was to prepare the people to accept Jesus.
9. Did Zacharias doubt? Luke 1:18.
10. How did the angel reply? Luke 1:19-20.
11. What were the people doing at the time of the burning of incense? Luke 1:10.
12. Did they detect anything unusual? Luke 1:21.
13. What did they decide when Zacharias came out? Why? Luke 1:22.
