Preview: Merriam-Webster definition: Prayer: a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or an object of worship.

Scripture Reading: Luke 11:1-4.

Memory Verse: II Chronicles 7:14.

1. Why does God command that we pray? II Thessalonians 1:11, Hebrews 11:6.

2. How often should we pray? I Thessalonians 5:16-18, Psalm 55:17.

Note: While Psalm 55:17 does mention praying at specific times a day, it is not saying that you can only pray at those times or even that you must pray at those times. It is saying that God will hear your voice whenever you pray, no matter when that is.

3. How should we pray? Jude 1:20, Romans 8:26.

Note: Praying in the Spirit means asking the Holy Spirit to increase your understanding and wisdom so that you don’t pray selfishly. You are praying a prayer that is in accordance with the will and Word of God. God does not answer worldly prayers.

4. Why does God want us to pray for other people? James 5:16, I Timothy 2:1.

5. Who should we pray for? Ephesians 6:18, Matthew 5:44.

Note: Intercessory prayer is the act of praying on behalf of other people. This means that you love another enough to pray for their salvation and wellbeing. It is also why the Lord commands us to love even those who persecute us: we are supposed to love all people and pray that they turn away from evil.

6. Is there power in Jesus’ name? What does His name do? Philippians 2:9-10, Ecclesiastes 8:2-4, John 14:6.

7. How does faith affect prayer? Mark 11:24, Hebrews 11:1, Matthew 21:22, Matthew 17:20.

8. Why should we practice thanksgiving towards the Lord? Colossians 4:2, Colossians 1:3, Ephesians 5:20.

9. Does God want to answer our prayers? On what conditions? Psalm 66:18, Psalm 145:18, I John 5:14.

10. What is prayer capable of achieving? Psalm 103:1-5, Hebrews 5:7.

11. Do righteous people have stronger prayers? Why or why not? James 5:16, Matthew 6:7, John 9:31.

12. How does God favor the humble? Luke 18:11-14, Proverbs 11:2, I Peter 5:5.
